Businesses & Individuals
From a local arts charity to an internationally touring musician, I've helped clients get closer to their audiences and goals through considered design and a pragmatic approach.
Although digital design is where I spend the majority of my time, I also have experience with branding and identity; print and packaging; and creative direction across other brand collateral – often working with a trusted range of talented suppliers and collaborators I've known personally for years.
So whether your style guide is large enough to hold open a heavy door, or you thought a style guide was something to do with hairdressing, it would be a pleasure to hear from you.
I develop primarily on Wordpress, but have experience with Drupal and most popular PHP frameworks. Some of my strongest skills are in visual design: taking wireframes and making them into polished visuals. My grounding in front-end development means all of my design decisions are made with confidence; I know exactly how they'll translate to code without winding up the development team. Delivery can be either in the form of tidy PSD/Sketch files with a CSS style guide, or as full static site builds. Conversely, I can take finished designs and build to the spec required.
I am happy to join a project halfway through, or be there from the beginning. When necessary, I'm happy to work onsite too.
Nice things said
He’s way more than just a visual designer. Being a web developer also, Al has a very context-sensitive way of approaching design, making it relate to user interaction and technical requirements at all points. He delivered to us not just polished designs but also full HTML style sheets to help us kickstart our dev process, displaying some strong coding skills too.
We continue to work with Al to help us with the presentation of our own product, again our most important work. His level of consistently high-quality delivery means we can rely on him for our best contracts.
Having worked with (Alaric) on other agency work, I was certain that he had the ideas and creativity to develop a design that would not only reflect the subject matter of ThinkNation (a task in itself) but which would also challenge me with strong opinions on what ‘great’ looked like. This was critical: he took our concept of what the designs hoped to achieve and, using his insight and expertise, quickly distinguished what they actually needed to achieve. Furthermore, he successfully worked remotely with a developer team who he’d never previously collaborated with.
The reason that I love working with Alaric is not just because his code is as beautiful as his design, or that he has an unusual ability to make meet deadlines, or because he speaks in a language that I understand, or that he genuinely cares about what he is making, or because he makes budgets work as best they can, or because he is very nice, it is because I trust him. I think secretly he may be an advanced experiment in A.I. Nobody can be this good. Surely?
Al has worked with us for over 5 years now on a variety of projects. He understands how we work and what we expect from the work we deliver. Moreover, Al is comfortable chatting with clients and we feel this really adds value with design. Al is a valuable asset as an overflow resource, in fact we think of him as one of the team.
Alaric is a huge talent – intuitive, proactive and endlessly positive. Not only did he do an amazingly creative job with the Keel Communications website – with a particularly innovative and entirely on-brand typographical solution – he also created a new and distinctive word mark logo for the company.
Al has the rare drive to understand the context of a design brief. His ability to produce high quality output across a diverse range of digital and physical media is unparalleled in my experience. Most importantly he brings a genuine passion and energy to his projects.
Professional yet accessible Alaric works to the highest of standards and, importantly for us as a charity, continually strives to keep his costs down while approaching the work with flexibility and a can-do attitude.
Alaric's attitude to producing the branding for my modern rural business was spot on; he understood what was required for a stand-out, innovative design and was very professional in his approach. I now have great branding that is receiving recognition, enabling my business to grow.
"Alaric has a one tractor mind"
"Alaric designs very at-tractor-ive websites"
"Alaric combine(harverter)s the design and technical aspects with deft skill"
Alaric is a developer not only gifted with superb vision and skills, but a craftsman who knew the sensitivities of bringing our ideas to life to communicate all the complexities of our brand and organisation.
Like most of my generation, I graduated from a provincial university with a degree in mediocre studies. Since then, I've galavanted all over Europe and the US, lived in a converted bus and spent a few years in-house at several agencies in the UK.
I've been self-employed since 2009, working on everything from designing global websites for well-known record labels, to project managing a multi-lingual social platform for a popular fizzy drink that everyone's heard of.
One of my biggest passions is cooking and consuming high cholesterol foods (pass the butter), and I make annual failed attempts to get fit. I'm also pretty keen on agricultural machinery and those funny old cameras that don't use memory cards.
I live by the sea with my girlfriend and a needy wolf that thinks it’s a lap dog.
